การรดน้ำผู้ใหญ่หรือการรดน้ำขอพรเป็นการแสดงความเคารพต่อผู้ใหญ่ของครอบครัวหรือผู้ใหญ่ที่เคารพนับถือและแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อผู้มีพระคุณ
Kaan rot nam dam hua is a ceremony to ask for blessings from the elders. Importantly, it is a show of respect to the elders in one’s family as well as seniors whom one is indebted to and to repay one's gratitudes to the elders.
ปัจจุบันบางแห่งรดเฉพาะที่ฝ่าเมือ โดยจะเอาน้ำหอมเจือในน้ำด้วย และให้ผ้านุ่งห่ม 1 ผืนไปมอบผู้ใหญ่พร้อมกับดอกไม้ธูปเทียน เพื่อให้แสดงความคารวะ และขอพรท่าน แล้วท่านก็จะให้ศีลให้พรและให้มีความสุขปีใหม่
Today, this ceremony is practised by the pouring fragrant water into the palms of the elders followed by presenting a towel, flowers and incense as an act of respect. The elders will in turn give blessings to the juniors and wish for their happiness in the new year ahead.

An important tradition observed during Songkran is the blessing Buddha images and Buddhist disciples with water for prosperity in the new year.

ปกติผู้ทำบุญจะช่วยกันขนทรายมาก่อพระเจดีย์ขนาดต่างๆ ในบริเวณวัด ให้ใช้ประโยชน์ในการก่อสร้างหรือถมพื้นที่เป็นเรื่องที่ถือว่าได้ทั้งบุญและสนุกสนาน
Building sand pagodas is another form of merit-making. Conventionally, merit-makers will contribute a joint effort to transport sand for the building of sand pagodas in the vicinity of the temples.
This activity is believed to be practised in the past to increase the ground level of the temples and protect against flooding. Today, the activity is still practised for purposes of merit-making and fun.

In preparation for Songkran, spring cleaning of homes and washing of clothes are done to "send away" the inauspicious luck accumulated in the previous year. In addition, new clothes are prepared and donned for merit-making activities at the temples.

Apart from the aforementioned merit-making activities, other such activities include visiting the temple to present cooked food, fresh fruits and other produce to the monks.
